Asking to Be Painted Oil
on Panel

"As I walked the beach along
Provincetown Harbor I came across an old row boat washed up where
the sand meets the beach grass. It was so weathered and tattered
and it looked like it had been painted many times, with layers
of red and green and purple accented by rust marks and scratches.
It looked like it needed painting in more ways than one. A friend
who lives nearby walked by with his dog as I was beginning this
painting and I asked him if this boat had a history. He said
he didn't know the history but it sure looked like it had one.
It's a challenge painting
something that is one color and capturing the differences of
tone and value to show volume in the three-dimensional structure.
Showing that volume with so many colors at the same time looked
to be a challenge but I'm very happy with the way it turned
out."

"I took a few visiting
artists up to paint in the big barn once owned by Charles Hawthorne,
former home of the Hawthorne School of Art. The space was open
and spacious, having been cleared out recently when the building
sold. My friends were painting the empty room illuminated by
the north-light window. There were a few objects here and there — dusty
bottles and vases that were the subject of many student still
life paintings. My attention was drawn to an old rusty pencil
sharpener. It was probably never the subject of a still life
painting but over the course of many years was used by countless
students in pursuit of their artistic dreams. A simple, humble
object whose mission was complete and had since been retired.
An arrangement of similar colors, oxidizing metals with a hint
of a shine left in the corners. An homage to a job well done."
