Along a Street in San Miguel      Oil on Canvas

“We stayed in a hacienda up a hill on eastern side of town, about a ten to fifteen minute walk from "Le Jardin" (the town square). The view from the house was magnificent. You could see the whole town with the ancient church spires rising up over old rooftops with dramatic mountains on the horizon. Some of the guys painted from our rooftop but most days we would hike down into town carrying our supplies in our backpacks. I admired the big vista but I was drawn to more intimate settings within the town. I loved the old cobblestone streets and the brightly painted stucco buildings. There where beautiful wooden doors in the buildings and every door seemed to be elaborate and unique. It was often hard to walk very far before having to stop and look at the interesting patterns and textures of the walls, doors, windows and sidewalks. I really enjoyed the shapes, colors and textures of this street setting, and the composition they form on the canvas. We would often see beautiful, dramatic sunlight and shadows on the buildings but his day the light was flatter. This painting is less about the effects of sunlight and more of a personal portrait of the buildings themselves.”

Portrait of Ignat Ignatov      Oil on Panel
Image 9 x 12     Framed 22 x 18     $1,700

“One afternoon I returned to the square and found Ignat on a park bench painting a wonderful portrait of Jerome. Iggy did a terrific job and he decided to return the favor and volunteered to pose the following day. The next day they set up on adjoining park benches and Iggy struck his pose. The only spot I found to sit was a bench directly across the walkway from Iggy, about 20 feet away. I would prefer to be closer but I decided I would try and "zoom in" and concentrate on just the portrait. Ignat did a great job of remaining motionless, despite the presence of an "eccentric" old man sitting nearby who continually shouted to no one in particular, and chanted in a sing-song Spanish that we did not understand. Because there was a walkway between Iggy and me, there were occasional groups of people walking and chatting that would come to a stop in between us and stare at what was going on. A few times I had to get up and part the forest of bodies that were blocking my view. As the sun moved across the sky, Iggy's face went from being in shadow to being hit with bright sunlight. Despite many challenges, I was pretty happy with the result. And, other than being hard to see through, the curious people we encountered in the square were very friendly and happy to watch us working.”
