Marshall Point Sunset      Oil
Image 20 x 24     Framed 22 x 25.5
$1,900

“While we were in Port Clyde everyone must have tried a painting of this house. It’s the lightkeeper’s house in Marshall Point, and it looks so strong sitting out on its point. As the sun sets behind it, the view is beautiful. The house is in shadow with just a few slivers of highlights. The windows are either letting some of that late day sun shine through, or reflecting the sky’s changing colors. When I was working on the study for this painting there were several other guys painting around me and we would go back and forth between quiet focus and teasing each other.”

Island Afternoon      Oil
Image 11 x 14
Framed 16.5 x 19.5     $900

“This is the view from the top of the hill on Monhegan looking across the harbor at the island, Manana. This is late afternoon light, which beautifully exaggerates the differences between the warm light and cool shadows. I got excited about this one and was almost too late for the departing ferry to get home. I had this energy from being around all of the other painters, and then being on such a magical island… it was hard to put the brush down while the sun was still shining.”

Pieces of Light      Oil on Canvas
Image 12 x 16
Framed 13.75 x 17.75     $950

“Spruce Head in the evening. I love the drama that comes from light glancing across the water. The top right section of this painting feels like it glows, and that sets the tone for the rest of this piece.”

Behind the Lobster Pound      Oil on Canvas
Image 12 x 16     Framed 13.75 x 17.75
$950

“A bunch of us were painting in Spruce Head, scattered around the little harbor. It’s so interesting to see what each of us came up with standing in the same area. Each of us found a different moment of beauty that inspired us to paint. This view struck me with its color and honesty. Bright blue trash cans are sitting around. Piled up green lobster traps. Part of a dark green dumpster peeks into the picture in front of the red walls. And a lone orange and white buoy is leaning out of a pile, while the light blue sky brightens up the scene. It’s an interesting balance between the pretty and the gritty.”

Edward's Rock      Oil on Board
Image 11 x 14     Framed 16.5 x 19.5
$900

“When we were on Monhegan at Gull Rock, I wanted to try to get a different vantage point, so I climbed down the rocks with my gear to see how the scene would look from a low spot. When I got down there I noticed this little part of the cliff that looked familiar. It looks just like a pile of rocks that Edward Hopper painted on Monhegan in one of his little oil sketches. And it’s a painting I’ve always loved, so I figured I would give it a try myself. One of the things that makes painting Maine rocks so difficult is that they are mostly gray, so you have to look for all of the subtle color variations in order to make them interesting. The light and shadows help create some of that drama, and the rest of it came from carefully studying the shifts in color.”

Low Tide Marsh      Oil on Canvas
Image 20 x 24     Framed 22 x 25.5
$1,900

“This marshy stream was seen often as we drove around looking for places to paint. At high tide there was nothing but water in the foreground and the scene lost all interest. At low tide the water pulled back to reveal this meandering movement of a tidal stream. The morning I was painting here I was right on the side of the road and had a lot of people stop by to say hi. The painting makes me feel peaceful, but it was done in a very public spot.”

Artist’s Statement

Painting is my release. It involves a certain amount of emotional, intellectual, and physical concentration all at once. After I paint I feel refreshed, excited and drained.

Painting is making everyday scenes into the poetic. Through painting a place I find moments of beauty in the space around me. The painting should look as though it breathes and has a life and presence of its own. All of my paintings are done almost entirely on site and are meant to capture the atmospheric feeling along with my own moods of each part of that day.

With respect to both the technical and spiritual aspects of art, I am guided by the paintings and words of Rembrandt van Rijn, Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Richard Diebenkorn, Don Kunz, Claude Monet, and Willem deKooning, among others.
