Outermost House Inspired by the Cape Cod National Seashore and Henry Beston’s Outermost House Henry Beston’s 1928 book, The Outermost House, is a classic of American Literature. Beston (1888-1968) wrote the book after spending a solitary “year” in a 20×16 house on the dunes of Eastham on Cape Cod, studying and observing the wonders of the elements in this stunning setting. Artists are happy to answer questions and discuss their techniques. Join them for a reception and see the still wet paintings at the Eastham Public Library from 2 to 4.

Amy Sanders Pastel Demonstration

Amy will demonstrate building depth and luminosity with pastel as she works towards bringing a painting to life through the building up of multiple layers. Pastel is a unique medium, in that the pigment particles retain their individuality within layers. If carefully layered using strokes in a variety of colors, weights and direction, light bounces among the particles creating a unique radiance that is the hallmark of the medium. Outermost Inspirations: See the Artists at Work

Maryalice Eizenberg and Susan Overstreet will be painting in oil plein air (outside, weather permitting) and Amy Sanders will be working in pastel inside the Museum.

Outermost Inspirations: Talk by Don Wilding, Beston Expert, at the Orleans Historical Society

Learn how Beston’s trail to Cape Cod began in World War I, how he tapped into the healing power of nature on the Outer Beach, how The Outermost House inspired legislators in Washington to establish the Cape Cod National Seashore, and the influence The Outermost House had on Rachel Carson and the American environmental movement. Archival photos and footage from the Beston/Outermost House documentary film will be included. Wilding will be available to sign books before and after his talk.
