"For over 50 years I have used the live model to study the infinite complexities of the human figure and to gradually evolve the forms into a personal vision," explains Joyce Johnson, "Many of those studies have influenced my abstract sculptures in wood and stone. Studying the figure in clay on a regular basis is similar to a musician playing the scales and other exercises."
