“This painting was created for the Provincetown Art Association and Museum’s 2012 Art of the Garden exhibit. When the curator invited me to participate, my first response was, “Flowers? I paint boats, buildings, and figures!”
I’d never painted flowers before as they seemed somehow too easily pretty. But, I’ve always loved gardens, and my own has been an endless source of pleasure and challenge. Much like painting. And here was a great excuse to bring two passions together.
I gathered flowers that I love—tulips and sunflowers–and set them up in front of a window in my studio, creating an “inside garden.” An unlikely pairing of a spring flower with a late summer flower. A sort of May/September gathering. And like the subjects of my building and boat paintings, I was surprised by their human qualities: the tangle of their stems, the expressiveness of their “faces,” the drooping and dropping of petals suggesting aging and the passing of time. Worthy subjects for further exploration.” -
