The Highland Light, used
by the Cape Cod Railroad on the Boston to Provincetown
run, was famed as one of the
most colorful engines of
the 19th century.
“This is a depiction
of the first train to travel the route between Boston and
Provincetown called the Highland Light. One blurry black
and white photo remains of this train (traveling with no
other cars but the engine and the coal car as seen here),
but it was reputed to be very colorful by the locals at the
time. This is a highly researched piece. The colors are based
on descriptions written by local people along the railroad,
as well as the company that built the train. The specific
tone of the blue was narrowed down by comparison with another
train built at the same time by the same company that has
survived and is in a museum out west (Pennsylvania). This
train carried people and supplies out from Boston, and carried
sand back from Provincetown to Boston.”

“Who could resist
this little guy, with the American flag bathing suit wandering
around the edge of a sandbar? Worry not, Grandma was right
there watching him like a hawk.”
