Artist's Assisstant Oil on Panel
10 x 8 Framed 16 x 14 $1,050
"I took a
few visiting artists up to paint in the big barn once
owned by Charles Hawthorne, former home of the Hawthorne
School of Art. The space was open and spacious, having
been cleared out recently when the building sold. My
friends were painting the empty room illuminated by
the north-light window. There were a few objects here
and there — dusty bottles and vases that were
the subject of many student still life paintings. My
attention was drawn to an old rusty pencil sharpener.
It was probably never the subject of a still life painting
but over the course of many years was used by countless
students in pursuit of their artistic dreams. A simple,
humble object whose mission was complete and had since
been retired. An arrangement of similar colors, oxidizing
metals with a hint of a shine left in the corners.
An homage to a job well done."

“Initially I was interested in the way the light was falling
across this scene, and the way the interior of the window
faded back in the shadows except for one painting and the
corner of another. I also like the narrative juxtaposition
of the woman standing on a cold city street with her hand
up to her scarf while admiring these warm pastoral scenes,
as if for those few moments she feels she is somewhere far
far away.”

Finding
Inspiration Oil
on Canvas
48 x 48 Framed 51 x 51 $10,000
“My
wife and I are artists and we spend most of our time
either painting, talking
about painting or looking at other
people’s paintings. We like to regularly visit
Provincetown galleries. In this painting, my wife is
finding inspiration
viewing work by an artist she admires. I found my inspiration
in the moment where she is finding hers. I love the way
she is standing while she is studying the work. She is
dressed
in black, standing by the colorful artwork and surrounded
by off-white walls. On either side you can see the darkness
of the night through the windows and another painting
reflecting back in the darkness.
It’s interesting to me that there is a kind of layering
going on. I am painting my wife, an artist, who is admiring
work by Cynthia Packard, while reflected in the distance
of the darkened window is a painting by Cynthia’s
mother, Ann Packard.”
