Artist's Statement:
It is the sunlight. Strong or soft that draws me to a subject.
The way the sunlight affects the subject, that is where the
interest and beauty is for me.
I have a deep interest in the substructure and
composition. Even though my work is expressive and loose in
application,
there is an underlying structure that must be strong.
I start
with a drawing (charcoal) of the most basic elements of composition
and build from there. That structure must
be accurate or intentionally inaccurate, anything in between
won't
work. You make a mark with intention and energy. If is
right, great. if not, wipe it out and start again. I don't
try to
adjust or manipulate it to make it work.
I explore the way
the paint is applied. Directly or in layers. Very thick or
just light washes. I love the beauty
of the
paint in itself. The texture is so luscious. Color is
an amazing
thing that I can't image every tiring of .... I use a
limited palette and that holds more than enough challenges
and
discoveries for me.
I try to play with edges. Sometimes
things are sharp and defined with the knife and other times
I diffuse
the edges.
It really
is playful for me.
I try to create work that expresses
how I view the world or subject. My goal is create a piece
that embodies
some
of the
beauty that has captured my attention.
Painting is
an integral part of each day. Being an artist deeply affects
the way I see the world.
I view myself as a student
of and in life. I will keep exploring and pushing to see
what I can create.
